Newsy! My Birthday Wish + Hot Milk Cake + Between Them (v.42)

March 29th, 2017

Consider this:

It’s My Birthday. Here’s My Wish.

I’m proud that I used to make my kids birthday cakes like this one!

I’m officially a year older than I was 364 days ago, so I thought I’d take stock of life, the universe and everything. Good news: I’m not going to lament getting old. I’m not going to talk about my alarmingly greying hair because I know someone who makes that problem disappear. I’m not going to discuss my soft and expanding belly because, well, I already did. I’m not even going to mention the bittersweet feeling I have knowing I’ll soon be the shortest, lightest and decidedly weakest member of my male-dominated family. Read more

Remember Elaine’s dance fever?

Not long ago, my hubby and I were watching Big Little Lies on HBO. In one scene, the yoga teacher, Bonnie, was leading the class through a very un-yoga-like routine that looked like a combination of kickboxing, aerobics and something a hipster might do in a trendy dance club on a Saturday night.

“What is that?” I said to my husband. “I want to do that!”  Read more

Two shades of resistance

It’s official: I’m a Mad Hatter.

Last week, I joined a group of local ladies who are knitting and purling for political resistance. Led by an inspired first-time activist name Lila, we’re raising money – more than $4200 and counting – for Planned Parenthood, the ACLU and other like-minded organizations by making pink pussy (cat) hats by the dozens.
For the price of materials ($6) and a $30 donation, you, too, can be the proud owner of a hat that’s hand-knitted with love – and purpose. Read more

My father-in-law, Julian, is an endocrinologist who ran his own practice for 40 years. Now 85, he still attends yearly conferences and reads all the current medical journals. At an age when most men have long since traded their daily grind for a relaxing retirement, Julian commutes an hour each way to his part-time job as a doctor at a New York state prison.  Read more

Dear @realDonaldTrump!

CONGRATULATIONS! In your speech to Congress, you exceeded presidential expectations – which have never been lower! No wonder you’re still GLOWING after acting “presidential” for a whole hour! (I thought “presidential behavior” was just part of Being President! Dumb!)  Read more

Recently I sat down at my computer thinking about a conversation about online education I had with a neighbor, which led me to search YouTube for videos about editing and writing. Next thing I know, I’m remembering my favorite high school A.P. English teacher and trying to recall whether she wore black and white saddle shoes or red Converse high-tops. Read more

Why, hello, Belly Fat.

I haven’t seen you ‘round these parts lately. My, you’re soft and jiggly. Where ever did you come from?

Hold on. I do remember you. You hung around for a good long time after I gave birth, especially the second time. Eventually, though, you kind of disappeared. In fact, I was confident I’d seen just about the last of you. I was pretty determined to keep you at bay, so I was diligent about doing crunches and lifts at the gym. Read more

I’ve listened to National Public Radio for so long it has become a part of me on a cellular level. When I hear the theme music for “All Things Considered,” my reaction is multisensory. At once, I’m transported back to 1979, one of several years my family and I spent on sabbatical from New Zealand, living in a little red cottage we rented from my grandmother in rural, northern Vermont. Victoria speaks out

Every summer, my family and I visit relatives in Rutland, Vermont. Located near the center of the Green Mountain State, Rutland has roughly the same population as my home town of Mill Valley, with about the same number of public schools. Now Rutland has something Mill Valley doesn’t: Syrian refugees. Nine, to be precise; five children and four adults. Read more

The Girls and I want to share a few thoughts about mammograms

The friendly reminder from my doctor’s office came by email: Time to schedule your mammogram!

You know the belief that women are biologically programmed to forget the pain of childbirth so they’ll reproduce again? I think the same rule applies to mammograms. Thanks to this week’s appointment, the memories all came rushing back.  Read more
